OR HoCo – a successful forum on “Improved Medicare for All: An Idea Whose Time Has Come” – 23 January
The chapter had a very successful forum in Howard County on “Improved Medicare for All: An Idea Whose Time Has Come.” The initial presenters were Ken Zinn (National Nurses United), Mark Dudzic (Labor Campaign for Single Payer), and Eric Naumburg (Physicians for a National Health Program). Dr. Naumburg’s thoughtful presentation is downloadable here.
The main speaker, however, was OR President Nina Turner, who inspired the group on the importance of Medicare for all as a central concern to Marylanders as well as for the rest of the country. A “drop-in” visit by OR MD endorsed candidate for governor, Ben Jealous, was an added bonus. He stressed the importance of a showcase, Maryland-based, Medicare-for-all program to precede a federal program, if that became necessary. The states could set the pace.
The Howard County Chapter kicked off with a great backyard meet-and-greet with Ben Jealous – OR-endorsed 2018 gubernatorial candidate — on September 16th. Jealous also addressed healthcare issues in an event at the Howard County library. Our Howard County chapter has begun door-to-door canvassing for the Jealous campaign.
A very active chapter, Howard County OR hosted the OR MD statewide monthly meeting on November 12, followed by a pot-luck lunch at which our chapter members spoke with the state-wide leadership of OR.
With activity buzzing in preparation for the 2018 elections, Howard County OR has distributed OR MD’s legislative program and questionnaires to candidates seeking election in local, county, and state-wide races. Howard County OR will compile and share responses with membership.
Howard County OR is forming issues committees (Healthcare, Electoral, Communications and Environmental) to define priorities in each area.
Howard County OR members have become increasingly active and engaged in local Democratic Club activities.
